The victims of the devastating fire outbreak which occured in Okeho around 1 AM on Sunday 17th 2024 have expressed displeasure at the indifference of the government since the unfortunate incident which took the town by unpleasant surprise.
Based on the interview conducted with some of the victims of the fire, the body language of the government since the incident does not portray the government to be one that empathizes with its people especially at the local level.
It was a terrible day for the people of Okeho as people suffered varying degrees of financial losses coupled with the temporary termination of their source of their livelihood.
One of the victims of the fire who pleaded anonymity, expressed sadness over the incidence as the bitter experience was coming at a time when the cost of living in the country was already too inconvenient for the common man.
“Some of the products I sell have gotten so expensive I cannot even afford to consume them with my family so loosing it all in some hours is something that will be hard to recover from.
“We don’t know where to start from because this tragedy has swallowed up our assets without leaving us something to survive on.
Speaking on the situation, another victim who equally pleaded anonymity expressed displeasure at the fact that an official statement has not been put out from the appropriate quarters of the government to commiserate with the victims.
“It just seems like the enormity of the disaster has not been understood by the people who should show concern.
Although the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, lots of controversy have surrounded the terrible occurrence. All businesses situated in the popular Palm Plus Recreational Centre in Isia, Okeho were affected as all the shops were razed by the fire that started around midnight. It has been estimated that the losses incurred in the fire undoubtedly would run into several millions of naira.
