Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has presented a report on the Bodija explosion to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. Makinde met with the President at the Presidential villa in Abuja to intimate the President on the explosion that rocked the state capital on January 18, 2024.
The governor expressed his appreciation to the president for the support he received since the explosion. He reiterated the commitment of his administration to provide relief to victims of the blast, reassuring that those responsible will be punished accordingly.
It was a fatal night on Tuesday, January 18 when an explosion occurred at Dejo Oyelese Street, Bodija, Ibadan. The casualty count so far includes five persons who have been confirmed dead, and 77 who were injured.
The governor confirmed earlier that more than 90 percent of the victims of the explosion have been discharged from the various hospitals across town where they were treated. The governor also confirmed that structural integrity tests were carried out on 230 properties located close to the site of the explosion.
Pesident Tinubu reacted earlier via a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, expressing sadness over the devastating explosion. Ngelale who quoted President Tinubu said; “It is worrisome that the cause of the blast is being attributed to the activities of illegal miners. Those behind the inexcusable and reckless behaviour that has created the conditions for the sad incident to occur must be fished out and punished.”
