Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state announced on Sunday that 90 percent of the victims of last Tuesday’s explosion in Bodija have been discharged from hospitals.
The governor noted that the Medical Team of the Emergency Operations Centre and the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, attended to victims even on Saturday.
This update from the governor regarding the ugly incidence of last Tuesday shows that five fatalities have been recorded so far.
According to the governor, as part of the moves to provide reasonable assistance to victims, a clinical psychologist has commenced counselling victims of the explosion at the Emergency Operations Centre situated at the Oyo State Housing Corporation, Bodija, Ibadan.
Governor Makinde once again commended security agencies in Oyo State for maintaining law and order around the scene of the explosion, and especially around Bodija. He assured that
“security agencies are still investigating the incident and an update on their investigation will be publicised.”
The governor also commended the residents of Bodija for their compliance with the directives given by the authorities reminding them that his administration will maintain its commitment to support the victims of the tragic event. He reiterated the government’s resolve to prosecute those found culpable.
“I commend our security agencies in Oyo State who have been maintaining law and order in and around Bodija this week as well as residents who have been complying with directives from these officers.
“Yesterday, the medical team at the Emergency Operations Centre in the company of the Honourable Commissioner for Health, visited two of the hospitals where victims from the incident were taken and over 90 per cent of the victims have been discharged.
“The death toll from the incident currently stands at five persons.
“The clinical psychologist has commenced counselling for victims of the incident at the Emergency Operations Centre in Ibadan.”
The governor added that search and rescue operations have ended at the Dejo Oyelese Close, the site of the explosion and that recovery efforts have begun.
Governor Makinde expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian Society of Engineers, who he revealed have commenced structural integrity tests on about 230 properties around the site of the explosion. He equally appreciated Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for releasing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to support Oyo State in its time of need.
“The operations at Ground Zero have moved from search and rescue to recovery.
